Why did you begin photography? What inspired you to begin?

I shot recreationally for years, but professionally I began in 2011.

Is there a specific niche of photography that you are known for or that you gravitate to?

I’ll shoot just about anything, but I mostly shoot a lot of outdoor hunting, fishing and recreational photos, as well as product photography and videography.

What is one thing you wish you knew before beginning outdoor/fish photography?

You don’t need every lens, just the one that can do the job.

Yosemite 3232

Is your photography a full-time job, or do you have a daily gig too?

Freelance filmmaking and photographing is a full time, year round gig for me.

How do you manage a work-life balance as a photographer?

I am constantly learning to set aside time for myself, time specifically for family, and time specifically to work.

Joe Humphreys Trip 3695

What brand of camera equipment do you shoot with?

I shoot with Canon cameras and lenses. Leica Q2 for personal use.

Which lens is your favorite for photographing in various conditions?

Canon 28-70 f/2

Montana 8515

Do you take macro-photography of flies? If so, what is your process/lens of choice?

Yes! The Canon 100mm l macro is a BEAST for that.

If someone is interested in getting involved in outdoor / fishing photography today, what would be some suggestions you would give them regarding introductory gear (camera body, lens, brand, editing software, etc.)?

You have to fall in love with the brand/product/story first. Gear is nowhere near as important as the story, although I have extreme G.A.S. (gear acquirement syndrome).

What editing software do you use the most for photo edits? Why?

I tend to use Adobe Lightroom the most. The program is quick and simple, I love it.

How did you learn this specific genre of photography?

I learned so much on YouTube. I have a film degree, but beyond that, I am entirely self taught.

Colorado Trip 7997

Out of all your photos, which is your favorite, and why?

This Brook Trout Shot. It was my very first fly fishing trip, and the first trip I got to know the Moonshine team. I loved the people. I was blown away by the day we caught the fish, and how pretty the fish was. This image holds a lot of good memories.

What was your first fishing experience?

My first fly fishing film shoot was in Colorado. A week of fly fishing and filming for Moonshine Rods. It was incredible. High mountain Brook Trout and big bows. I fell in love.

When did you begin fly fishing?

The Summer of 2017.

Pensacola Trip 2247

What draws you to fly fishing, both personally and professionally?

I love that it’s so engaging. I am constantly learning, improving, and working on my cast. Artistically, I love how visual it is. Both the motion of casting and the fish themselves.

Who is your biggest inspiration or mentor?

My biggest inspiration is probably YETI. I love their content and what they are about. I don’t really look up to other photographers because I don’t want my work to emulate anyone else.

Iceland 8030

Do you remember your first published piece (if applicable)?

Yes, my first fly fishing short was accepted into the Fly Fishing Film Tour. “KINGDOM” . It was an incredible experience.

With so many people scrolling on their phones, does social media play a role in your photography?

A ton of my work actually comes from bookings through social media, so I would say it plays a role. As annoying as it can be at times, it definitely helps book clients and get my name out there

Do you have any tips to help people take better photos with their smartphones?

I always tell people that angles and lighting are far more important than camera and lens. Once you learn about lighting you are far better off than people with way nicer cameras that don’t understand lighting.

Do you suggest any smartphone apps for photo editing?

I love Tezza for quick edit!

Colorado Trip 7955

Any tips for other aspiring outdoor / fishing photographers?

The best thing you can do is take more photos, always take steps to get better.

What is your favorite weather to photograph in, or what is your favorite time of day?

Love a good sunrise and sunset, but give me clouds for the rest of the day!

Iceland 7635

What photography trends currently inspire your work?

I don’t believe in trends 😀
