The Mayfly Project is a 501(c)(3) national organization that uses fly fishing as a catalyst to mentor children in foster care.
Participants join our TMP mentors for a minimum of 5 outings where the kids develop fly fishing skills, learn about conservation and characteristics of an angler, fish at various locations around their city, and catch multiple species of fish on the fly with their own mentor. We utilize an all-encompassing curriculum, our art of tying program where we teach kids to tie flies, and we have a button incentive program where the kids earn buttons for their participation. At the end of the project, every child receives their own fly fishing gear to keep.
Children in foster care benefit greatly from fly fishing because the melodic casts have proven to help those who are processing trauma or struggling with PTSD, and it gives them an opportunity to have fun and find a connection with the outdoors. TMP now has 60 plus projects across the country and in the United Kingdom!
