The Pink Poupoune Streamer

The Pink Poupoune Streamer has been tested with great success fishing for Ouananiche, over the last five years at the Bohier Lake area, located in Quebec’s Lower North Shore, a true wilderness experience.

Material list

Hook: Tiemco 300 # 2 or Daiichi 2052 # 1.5 Note: you can tie the Poupoune on size 2 to 8 streamer hooks. I had good success in smaller streams with size 6 and 8.

Thread: UNI-Thread Black #8  ( Fire Orange colour for the Orange Poupoune version)

Tail : Large bunch of red Marabout

Body:  UNI-mylar Holographic Silver size # 10

Under the hook: White Deer Tail Fibers

Over the hook :

Pink Deer Tail Fibers

About a dozen strands of Purple Crystal Flash

6 to 8 Peacock Herl Fibers, picked close to the eye

Cheek : A pair of Silver Pheasant Feather, each side of the hook

Eyes: Jungle cock eye, if legal, if not, use an imitation

Equipment recommended to fish Ouananiche on Quebec’s North Shore

Rod: Quality 9 foot fast action fly rod,  for 7 or 8 weight line.

Lines: Floating line with 10 to 20 ft sinking tip , type 4 or 6 for casting inlets and outlets of lakes. And, a full sinking fly line type 6 (extra fast sinking ) for trolling the lakes and slow moving water.

Leader: 6 to 8 foot long, 8 to 10 lb , I recommend Maxima Chameleon leader material.

Step 1

Roll the black thread 4 to 5 times back and forth of the hook; place a good bunch of red marabou for the tail. Next, Attach 12 to 15 inches long Uni Mylar to the front of the hook and roll on the shank, back and forth with the Mylar, clip the extra.

step1 2 rotated

Step 2

Select from the tail, a good bunch of long white deer hair and put it solidly under the hook shank.

Step 3 rotated

Step 3

Grab a good bunch of Pink deer tail hair and put it solidly on top of the hook shank.

Note: I have tied this and had success replacing the pink deer hair with bright orange deer hair. Ouananiche seems to love it on bright, calm sunny days… We call it then: The Orange Poupoune.

Step 4 rotated

Step 4

Choose a dozen strands of purple Crystal Flash and place it on top of the pink deer hair. Next, top of the Flash, place 8 strands of peacock herl fibers picked out close to the eye of the peacock feather.

Step 5 rotated

Step 5

Place a single silver Pheasant feather on each side of the hook shank.

Step6 1 rotated

Step 6

Optional, but not for me: a Jungle cock eye feather (if legal, or use an imitation).

Step 7 1 rotated

Step 7

Finish the head with 2 coats of black head cement, let dry, and put one coat of clear cement for a glossy finish.

Final Step

To be sure that the final product passes quality control, be sure to pass it through HR. In my case, HR is my dog Theo. In this case, it grants his approval.

Finished with Theo rotated
